## Mayer's Momentum: Breakout Win Sets Sights on Cup Series

Sam Mayer finally broke through for his first win of the 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, sparking attention from veteran driver Denny Hamlin. The victory wasn't just any win - it was Mayer's first with Haas Factory Team, the organization's first win this year, and the first Ford triumph in the series this season.  This milestone also cemented his spot in the playoffs, a position he was already on track to secure.

**Hamlin Praises Mayer's Transition**

On his podcast "Actions Detrimental," Hamlin lauded Mayer for making a successful switch from JR Motorsports. "Certainly you don’t think the equipment is quite as good," Hamlin said, acknowledging the perceived gap in performance between the teams.  "In Xfinity, it’s tough because I’m not in the trenches there, I don’t know all the details of it. But it seems like Sam’s been doing a really good job lately of getting good finishes. Obviously, he won some road course races with JR [Motorsports] over the last few years. He’s winning on ovals, he’s doing all the good things."

Hamlin added, "You know, we had discussions about Sam, um, I don’t know, probably early in the year, where I think he was probably doing something dumb, and it was like, and then he was talking about how people weren’t looking at him to move up, and we were like, well that’s why. As long as he keeps doing things like this, certainly he’s doing a lot of good things. He was fast all weekend. Wasn’t by accident by any means.”

**Mayer's Road to the Cup Series**

Last year, Mayer voiced his frustration at being passed over for Cup Series opportunities. While there were fewer new faces in the series this season due to a lot of shuffling and returning veterans, Mayer, still just 22 years old, continues to demonstrate his talent. His winning streak stretches back to his time in the ARCA East Series and even the CARS Tour.

Though  a Cup Series ride might be out of reach for now with limited "Silly Season" movement, the 2026 season holds many unknowns that could benefit a driver like Mayer - if the right opportunity presents itself.

## College Football RedZone: Could It Be Coming Soon?

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hinted at the possibility of a dedicated College Football RedZone channel during an appearance on ESPN's SportsCenter. 

**Goodell Addresses Future of NFL RedZone**

"It’ll continue to be produced right here in this building," said Goodell from the NFL Network broadcast studio in L.A., when asked about the future of NFL RedZone. "It will be the NFL RedZone. I don’t think fans will see any difference to that."

**ESPN's Acquisition Opens Doors for New Possibilities**

However, with ESPN recently acquiring the rights to the RedZone name, Goodell acknowledged the potential for its use in other sports. 

"Obviously, in the context of that, though, ESPN purchased the RedZone name, and they will be able to utilize that for other sports, college football and other things, and I think that could be an exciting thing for our fans also to see a RedZone, maybe in college football or other sports. That’s something that they now own and have the ability to do that," Goodell explained.

**A College Football Fan's Dream?**

The prospect of a College Football RedZone channel has generated significant excitement among fans. With more college football teams than the NFL, such a channel could provide continuous coverage from 12 p.m. ET to 12 a.m. ET, featuring multiple hosts and keeping viewers updated on all the action across the country.

**NFL Network Sold to ESPN in Major Deal**

On Tuesday evening, the NFL announced a landmark deal with ESPN, selling the network and other media assets, including NFL RedZone and NFL Fantasy, in exchange for 10 percent equity in ESPN.  Despite the sale, Goodell emphasized that the NFL will continue to own, operate and produce NFL RedZone.


“Since its launch in 2003, NFL Network has provided millions of fans unprecedented access to the sport they love,” said Goodell in a statement. “Whether it was debuting Thursday Night Football, televising the Combine, or telling incredible football stories through original shows and breaking news, NFL Network has delivered. The Network’s sale to ESPN will build on this remarkable legacy, providing more NFL football for more fans in new and innovative ways.”

## Parsons Wants Out: Cowboys Star Seeks Trade Amid Stalled Contract Talks

The Dallas Cowboys are facing a crisis as star pass rusher Micah Parsons has requested a trade, just weeks after contract negotiations with the team hit a wall. 

**A Deal That Fell Apart**

Parsons' agent, David Mulugheta, reportedly reached an initial agreement with the Cowboys during past discussions. However, progress stalled despite assurances from the team that "it was pretty much already done." This lack of follow-through left Parsons frustrated and ultimately seeking a new home.

**The Importance of Handshakes: Jones vs. Parsons**

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones insists on the significance of agreements made face-to-face, referencing his own purchase of the team in 1989 as an example.  "I bought the Cowboys with a handshake," Jones said. "It took about 30 seconds... those are done with eye contact and handshakes."

This stark contrast between Jones' approach and the reality of modern contract negotiations highlights the disconnect fueling Parsons’ dissatisfaction.

**Money Matters: Watt Sets the Bar**

Parsons is reportedly seeking a deal similar to the one recently signed by Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt, who secured a three-year, $123 million contract. With Watt playing the same position, Parsons' demands are within reason given his own exceptional talent and performance.  

Jones, however, dismisses any singular issue hindering progress in negotiations, claiming that "there’s no point...that I would say is out of the ordinary." 

**Parsons' Unwavering Focus: A Trade Above All Else**

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that Parsons' sole focus now lies on securing a trade.  While he has reported to training camp and avoided fines, his commitment to playing for the Cowboys seems wavering. Fowler adds that multiple teams across the league are interested in acquiring Parsons, recognizing his potential as a "Reggie White-like" talent.

The Cowboys, however, remain steadfast in their refusal to trade him, leaving Parsons' future uncertain.
